What’s more fun than NEKKID Twister? The answer of course is NEKKID Roundy-round, played on a ¼ mile dirt track with 6 guys and a girl. Let me tell you folks, last night it was the teacher lady who took those bad boys to school!
The first heat was a write-off for the class. With the wind blowing steadily from the south and directly into the faces of the crowd, track management wanted to make sure it was thoroughly watered to keep the dust down. Despite lots of grooming with the graders and packing by the sprint cars and the hobby stocks it was still slick and boggy when the Stock 4s went out to race. No one could get any traction or acceleration. Very frustrating and one of the reasons it’s nice not to be first in the line-up. However, 4 classes later the track was packed tight and by the time our 2nd heat came up conditions were near perfect.
Everyone got a good start and it was Joe Dery battling with Gina Doherty and newcomer Johnny #14 for the lead. Eventually Gina pulled out front and won the heat. Meanwhile Joe’s 5 car developed some mechanical issues. First time racer Trevor “Fast Eddie” Cameron battled with fellow NEKKID racer Dave Sherriff. After a little crashing and bashing he managed to blow a hose but finished the race blowing steam and in 4th place! Fortunately for “Fast Eddie” all Cris asked was that he keep the bumpers on and her 67 car shiny side up. She didn’t say anything about paint scrapes and new dents!
Time for the main event! A bit of grooming and a lick of water left the track still packed and rutted but very drivable and less dusty. In order to get the win, take home the trophy, and prove that women really can race Gina needed to pass every one of those other cars in a 15 lap race. Not an easy task by any means. Driving one of the fastest cars on the track helped her through traffic and up to the leaders. Passing “Fast Eddie” Cameron in his borrowed #67 proved to be no easy task since “Fast Eddie” was not about to give way politely to a lady driver. No way. No how. When he heard a car on the outside he pushed there and did the same thing on the inside. At about the halfway mark in the race, with Joe still in front, Gina decided enough was enough. She held her line hard and bumped her way past “Fast Eddie” on the outside through turns 1 and 2, finally beating him in the back stretch. To his credit Trevor held off a challenge from #14 and maintained his 3rd place. An excellent finish on his first night playing in the dirt! Meanwhile up front Gina set her sights on the back end of Joe’s #5 car and worked her way up and by him within a few laps to take the lead. She then showed the rest of the field the race line taking the chequered flag about 2 car lengths in front of teammates Joe and Trevor. NEKKID Racing 1-2-3!!!
Fans in the stands said it couldn’t be done. That there was no way a woman driver would win the main event. They were wrong. That mild mannered (stop laughing) school teacher showed those boys how it was done and took home the hardware to prove it!
Special thanks to Cris Patterson for loaning Trevor “B” and giving him a chance to play in the dirt. Line ups went smoothly again thanks to the efforts of Paul Doherty in making sure everyone knew where to be and when. As always, huge thanks to the many sponsors who support NEKKID Racing and to the family, friends and fans who come out to cheer their favourites on. Once again, Stock 4s ran clean – no caution flags and no waiting for starts – and I think we put on a pretty good show. Well-done everyone!
