NEKKID NEWS

July 18, 2009

What’s more fun than NEKKID Twister? The answer of course is NEKKID Roundy-round, played on a ¼ mile dirt track with 6 guys and a girl. Let me tell you folks, last night it was the teacher lady who took those bad boys to school!

The first heat was a write-off for the class. With the wind blowing steadily from the south and directly into the faces of the crowd, track management wanted to make sure it was thoroughly watered to keep the dust down. Despite lots of grooming with the graders and packing by the sprint cars and the hobby stocks it was still slick and boggy when the Stock 4s went out to race. No one could get any traction or acceleration. Very frustrating and one of the reasons it’s nice not to be first in the line-up. However, 4 classes later the track was packed tight and by the time our 2nd heat came up conditions were near perfect.

Everyone got a good start and it was Joe Dery battling with Gina Doherty and newcomer Johnny #14 for the lead. Eventually Gina pulled out front and won the heat. Meanwhile Joe’s 5 car developed some mechanical issues. First time racer Trevor “Fast Eddie” Cameron battled with fellow NEKKID racer Dave Sherriff. After a little crashing and bashing he managed to blow a hose but finished the race blowing steam and in 4th place! Fortunately for “Fast Eddie” all Cris asked was that he keep the bumpers on and her 67 car shiny side up. She didn’t say anything about paint scrapes and new dents!

Time for the main event! A bit of grooming and a lick of water left the track still packed and rutted but very drivable and less dusty. In order to get the win, take home the trophy, and prove that women really can race Gina needed to pass every one of those other cars in a 15 lap race. Not an easy task by any means. Driving one of the fastest cars on the track helped her through traffic and up to the leaders. Passing “Fast Eddie” Cameron in his borrowed #67 proved to be no easy task since “Fast Eddie” was not about to give way politely to a lady driver. No way. No how. When he heard a car on the outside he pushed there and did the same thing on the inside. At about the halfway mark in the race, with Joe still in front, Gina decided enough was enough. She held her line hard and bumped her way past “Fast Eddie” on the outside through turns 1 and 2, finally beating him in the back stretch. To his credit Trevor held off a challenge from #14 and maintained his 3rd place. An excellent finish on his first night playing in the dirt! Meanwhile up front Gina set her sights on the back end of Joe’s #5 car and worked her way up and by him within a few laps to take the lead. She then showed the rest of the field the race line taking the chequered flag about 2 car lengths in front of teammates Joe and Trevor. NEKKID Racing 1-2-3!!!

Fans in the stands said it couldn’t be done. That there was no way a woman driver would win the main event. They were wrong. That mild mannered (stop laughing) school teacher showed those boys how it was done and took home the hardware to prove it!

Special thanks to Cris Patterson for loaning Trevor “B” and giving him a chance to play in the dirt. Line ups went smoothly again thanks to the efforts of Paul Doherty in making sure everyone knew where to be and when. As always, huge thanks to the many sponsors who support NEKKID Racing and to the family, friends and fans who come out to cheer their favourites on. Once again, Stock 4s ran clean – no caution flags and no waiting for starts – and I think we put on a pretty good show. Well-done everyone!

Hello Race Fans -

This night at the track belonged to Nekkid Racing!

Nekkid racing had planned on having all 4 cars out at this event with Cris Patterson making her debut in the #67 car and Trevor Cameron filling in for Sean in the #75 car as Sean was needed to run the class at the track.Unfortunately due to last minute mechanical issues the #75 car was unable to make it to the track and a disappointed Trevor did not get to race. With dark skies and rain in the Calgary area we were not really sure if we woud actually get a race in.But with the track located about a half hour south of town the weather held of to give Nekkid Racing a chance to show what they were ALL really made of and put on a great show for the fans. In the first 10 lap heat Joe Dery #5 started on the outside poll due to drawing a low number in the draw. When the green flag dropped Joe #5 took the lead and was pretty much gone.In all fairness most of the faster cars started farther back in the pack from drawing high numbers.Joe #5 went on to lap several cars and win the first heat with Gina Doherty #69 making her way through the field and taking 2nd and Cris Patterson making a strong showing in her first time out.

In the second 10 lap heat race things got really interesting.Does anybody who knows Sean think he can go to a race track and NOT race?? I don't think so.LOL.Sean convinced his wife to let him drive her #67 car A turbo charged lebaron in the 2nd heat.Because of winning the 1st heat Joe #5 had to start at the back of the pack. When the green flag dropped Sean #67 and Gina #69 took to the front running 1st and second.Joe #5 made his way through the field of cars and with only a few laps remaining was able to catch Sean and Gina. With only a couple of laps remaining Coming out of turn 4 Sean went high Gina was in the middle and Joe went low to pass Gina.As Joe got passed Gina a little rubbing is racing took place between Sean and Joe With Sean maintaining the lead.On the last lap Joe again attempted to pass Sean Coming out of turn 4 and it was a drag race to the finish line with Sean taking the win by about 2 feet ahead of Joe and Gina close behind in 3rd.

The main was originally slated to be 20 laps was extended to 25 laps because of everything running so smoothly. Nekkid Racing took the first 4 starting positions with Cris Patterson #67 on the pole.Gina Doherty #69 on the outside pole.Joe Dery #5 in 3rd and our new friend and team member Dave Cameron #12 in 4th.When the green flag dropped Gina and Dave shot to the front taking the early lead.It took Joe a couple of laps to get around Cris and start his charge to the front.Joe was able to catch and pass Dave in turns 1 & 2 and then set his sights on Gina.It took a couple of more laps but Joe eventually caught and passed Gina.Joe had an incredible night and went on to create a large lead lapping most of the field.Gina was doing some lapping of her own and Cris was showing a lot of potential and Dave was holding his own.In the end it was Joe Dery #5 taking the checkered for his first main win.Gina #69 taking 2nd And i think Dave #12 taking 4th.Again Cris made a good run for her first time out and showed that she will be a future contender.

All in all a great night for Nekkid racing.

Just a side note. Both heats and the main were run without a single caution. Not one single car sustained any major damage. There will always be a little bumping and banging when racing on a dirt track. But everybody raced a good clean race and a ton of fun was had by all.

Thanks to our family, friends and sponsors and of course the fans, who make this all possible.

Joe Dery #5

Hey Race Fans!

It was a stunning evening for racing last night! Sean had the #75 tuned and was ready for his win; Joe spent Friday night painting the #5 in red and black and was in the hunt for a (much) bigger trophy; and Gina in the #69 had her sights firmly on a top half finish in all 3 runs. The field for the night was small at only 8 cars and we were happy to welcome two pavement drivers to the dirt. They seemed pretty happy to be there too! In the first heat Gina made it look easy as she held off Joe's passing attempts and hung on to 2nd place, Joe in 3rd and Sean somewhere behind Joe. To be fair though, Sean's transmission was slipping again and his motor nearly blew! Sean decided to sit out the second heat in hopes of saving enough of the 75's engine to run in the main. The second heat got off to an exciting start! Joe and Gina started side by side but Gina was a hair faster on the green and managed to pass him as they roared down the front straight. The #3 car made a little move to the outside and on that slippery wet track no one had much traction! The hit from the 3 car was enough to slam Gina into the wall between turn 1 and 2. The tie rod on the 69's right front wheel snapped. Fans were entertained by the slip sliding of the tow truck as it tried for traction and took 2 runs to get her off the track. Following a full restart - since we crashed with less than a full lap completed - Joe showed what he's made of and with team mates standing in the corner and fans in the stands raced to a first place finish! All Nekkid hopes rested with Sean (and the limping 75) and Joe for the main event. The field chased the visiting #81 and #12 cars around and around with the real race happening between Sean and Joe for 3rd. Unfortunately for Joe he blew a tire and got black flagged off the track. This year's Prelude truly is a 3rd place car.

Congratulations to Willy and Dave on their trophies last night. We hope they'll come play in the dirt with us again soon!
